How to Prepare Your AC for the Texas Summer

How to Prepare Your AC for the Texas Summer | Grande Air Solutions

In Austin, Texas, homeowners face long, brutal summers with temperatures frequently climbing above 100°F. Preparing your air conditioning system before the extreme heat arrives is critical to ensuring comfort, preventing costly repairs, and avoiding emergency breakdowns. This seasonal guide provides a detailed checklist for Austin homeowners to prepare their AC systems for summer.

Why Pre-Summer AC Preparation Is So Important in Austin

Austin’s intense summer climate puts incredible strain on air conditioning systems. Factors that make pre-season preparation essential include:

  • Prolonged heatwaves starting as early as May

  • High humidity levels that challenge system efficiency

  • Heavy allergen loads from cedar, oak, and ragweed

  • Increased energy consumption and risk of system failure during peak demand

Without proper preparation, homeowners risk mid-summer breakdowns when HVAC companies are already booked solid.

Schedule a Professional Spring AC Tune-Up

The most important step to prepare your AC for summer is scheduling a professional spring tune-up. During a routine maintenance visit, a technician will:

  • Clean condenser coils for maximum heat transfer

  • Check refrigerant levels and pressures

  • Test electrical components and safety controls

  • Inspect blower motor and fan operation

  • Flush condensate drain lines to prevent backups

  • Replace air filters

Regular tune-ups not only improve efficiency but also help avoid emergency AC repairs during peak heat waves.

Change Air Filters Monthly

In Austin’s dusty, high-pollen environment, air filters clog quickly. Homeowners should:

  • Replace filters every 30-45 days during heavy use

  • Use high-quality pleated filters rated MERV 8 or higher

  • Consider advanced filtration options for allergy sufferers

Clean filters improve airflow, reduce strain on your system, and enhance indoor air quality.

Clear Debris from Outdoor Units

Outdoor condensers require unobstructed airflow. Homeowners should:

  • Remove leaves, grass, and debris from around the unit

  • Trim shrubs or plants at least 2 feet away

  • Ensure the unit sits level on a stable pad

Restricted airflow can cause your system to overheat and shut down.

Consider Duct Cleaning and Air Sealing

Leaky or dirty ductwork reduces system efficiency and can introduce allergens into your home. Services like duct cleaning and air sealing improve comfort, especially in older Austin homes.

Check Thermostat Programming

Verify your thermostat settings before summer hits:

  • Set cooling mode to 78°F when home

  • Program higher temps when away

  • Test smart thermostat connectivity

  • Replace batteries if applicable

Proper thermostat settings reduce energy waste and keep your home consistently comfortable.

Inspect Insulation and Attic Ventilation

Proper insulation and ventilation reduce the cooling load on your AC system. Austin homeowners should:

Reducing attic heat gain can significantly lower indoor temperatures and energy bills.

Know When to Upgrade Older AC Systems

If your system is over 12-15 years old, struggles to cool your home, or frequently requires repairs, consider AC installation of a newer high-efficiency unit. Modern systems handle Austin’s climate more effectively while reducing long-term operating costs.

Trust a Licensed HVAC Contractor for Seasonal Preparation

Working with a licensed HVAC contractor ensures your system is professionally prepared for summer. Contractors can:

  • Spot issues invisible to homeowners

  • Perform safe refrigerant handling

  • Verify system sizing and airflow balance

  • Provide documentation for manufacturer warranties

frequently asked questions (FAQ)

When should I schedule my spring AC maintenance in Austin?

It’s ideal to schedule your spring AC tune-up between March and May before temperatures consistently rise above 90°F. Early maintenance ensures your system operates efficiently before peak demand.

What happens if I don't prepare my AC before summer?

Neglecting pre-summer maintenance increases your risk of system failure during heat waves, higher energy bills, and costly emergency repairs when demand for service is at its highest.

Does attic insulation impact AC performance in Austin?

Yes. Proper attic insulation and ventilation help reduce heat gain inside your home, allowing your AC system to cool more efficiently and lower your energy bills during Austin’s extreme summers.

Can dirty ductwork affect my AC's ability to cool?

Yes. Dirty or leaky ducts reduce airflow, spread allergens, and force your system to work harder to cool your home. Duct cleaning and air sealing services improve efficiency and comfort.

From the get go, Kassidy was excellent in scheduling options and even managed to snag me an earlier time slot than previous discussed. She took the time to reach out and confirm. A major shout out to Jamie and Carlo—talk about pros. They were excellent on providing education and explaining the why behind my duct issues. This was the initial inspection and I’ll make sure to leave details once the work is completed.

What an amazing team of people! I came home from vacation and my house was hot. It was hot outside- Austin in the summer hot. I spoke with Petra and she was able to get a technician out within a couple of hours. That in itself is quite a feat given it was after 1:30pm. Jaime Ortega was dispatched and came to check the system. This guy has great customer service skills! He is a is very respectful, polite, communicate well, explains what is going on and is very thorough. He was joined by Carlos, who is also very polite, considerate and knowledgeable. These guys make a really great team. I was told there were several problems and I explained I had been trying to deal with one side of my house not working properly and the other side never getting cool in the summer and warm in the winter. My electric bills over the last 2 months were unsustainable. They went into the attic and traced down all the ductwork, discovered some of it had been installed incorrectly and they formulated a solution. It was also decided by me to replace the entire AC system. By the time this was decided, it was well after 6:30pm. I asked when we would be able to get this to happen and they said - tomorrow! They showed up on time and regretably I did not get the 3rd team member's name- and he deserves a shout out too. They worked for more than 8 hours in that horrible heat- got the system installed and everything cleaned up, packed up, and left the space better than they found it. I really appreciate skilled professionals that respect someone's home and who take the time to talk with me and let me know what is going on, what they are finding and how to take care of my investment. I have chosen for several years to be part of their maintenance membership plan and I have never been disappointed- even when I have an unexpected event - like a system failure while on vacation. I have had the privilege of meeting one of the owners, talking with the administrative staff, and 3 technicians that are really awesome people. These guys care about the quality of work they perform and they work to keep their customers happy. No wonder they have such great reviews! I am very happy with the service I received, the way I was treated and the value they bring to their industry. Keep up the good work! I will certainly tell everyone I know to call you when they need help. Perfect name too- GRANDE AIR SOLUTIONS!!!

A/C stopped working on a Friday night and Isael came out within the hour and got it working. He was really knowledgeable and showed us other areas to keep an eye on. He stayed long enough to make sure the system was lowering the temperature in the house.

Our A/C went out late in the day on a Friday. Grande Air was able to get us in Friday evening and got our A/C up and running in just a short time. Prices were also very reasonable even though it was a weekend evening. We will definitely use them again for future A/C needs.
